The Laughing Owl (Ninox albifacies) earned its name from its call, said to resemble a throaty chuckle. Once found across New Zealand, this raptor disappeared in the early 1900s, made vulnerable by ground-nesting habits in a time of massive deforestation.
This notebook is a small way to keep its memory alive. The cover features a well-known drawing by Dutch artist John Gerrard Keulemans, done in 1871, four decades before the last confirmed sighting.

ABOUT ME
I'm a veteran artist and graphic designer who recently discovered birding. It started with the movie THE BIG YEAR. I figured, Sure, this is about birdwatching, but it has three of my favorite stars. How bad can it be? Turns out, it's fantastic. Instead of finding something stuffy and dull, you're plunged into a world filled with drama, excitement and meaning. Immediately hooked, I ordered the book, then started learning to identify birds on my own.
At one point, I wanted to put something physical in my space to remind me of this new adventure. Specifically, I wanted something made for a birder, not a product with a generic bird-like shape slapped onto it. Aside from a few field journals — which weren’t quite what I had in mind — I couldn’t find anything to fit the bill (pun intended). So I figured, You've got the know-how. Why not make your own?
These mugs were my first designs, and I hope that digitally restoring and revamping the incredible zoological illustrations done by history's naturalists helps keep their work relevant in some small way.
Since making these travel mugs, I've done other products—including hats, wine tumblers, and grab-and-go bags. But this is just the beginning. After all, there's A LOT of birds out there and making meaningful things for birders is almost as fun as birding itself.
